The Apo Island Marine Sanctuary is just a short 30 minute boat ride from Atmosphere, and has been a well-preserved marine sanctuary for the past 20 years. Apart from having stunning sub-aquatic views, the warm waters provide an outstanding diving experience all year round. With an international reputation for having the largest and most diverse collection of corals in Asia Pacific, Apo Island is undoubtedly a scuba diver's heaven and remains a number one diving destination in the Philippines. |
Cogon | max depth 30m Cogon is named after the Filipino 'cogon' grass that lines the shore in front of the dive site. This dive site is known for its sometime fierce currents and is therefore only recommended for advanced divers with drift diving experience. The dive site starts on a sandy slope, with an impressive array of corals, look out for the family of bump head parrot fish that sometime frequent this area. As the dive site progresses the topography changes to an impressive wall dive. The current ensures there is a variety of marine life in evidence and keep an eye open in the blue for the huge schools of big eye trevallies. Mamsa | max depth 30m Mamsa is the local word for 'Jacks' and often there is a large school of Jacks to be seen at this dive site. Again prone to strong current, this is also a drift dive for the more experienced diver. Starting on a steep slope the topography is quite unique as it turns into a host of underwater boulders which later joins a steep wall covered in soft corals. Drift along and keep your eyes open for the occasional hawksbill turtle. Kan Uran | max depth 30m+ Kan Uran is situated on a point where two currents meet. The temperature change can usually be felt as the currents mix and occasionally you can feel the turbulent water. The dive site is a wall dive with many overhangs and crevices which ends on a steep slope at the start of the marine sanctuary. A dive site that is suitable for most levels assuming the current is not so strong. Marine Sanctuary | max depth 30m+ Located on the South East Shore of Apo Island on the border of the town, the Marine Sanctuary was one of the first in the Philippines. Fishing has been prohibited in this area for the last 20 years and there is a limit to 12 divers per day. The result of which is impressive, the corals are pristine and the variety is unimaginable. The wall drops down to around 30m and there is generally little current. The site is great for all levels and at the end of the dive you will be rewarded with a visit to 'clown fish city', an area in the shallows that is full of hundreds of clownfish swimming around their anemones. Rock Point East/West | max depth 30m Rock Point is separated into 2 different dives sites East side and West side, both are situated on the southern tip of the island pointing towards Mindanao. Generally there is a light current sweeping towards to the tip of the point from the East side and on the West side it varies. The dive site starts on a steep wall and tapers towards a plateau at the point. Suitable for divers of all levels this is an impressive dive site for the marine life. Commonly seen in the area are turtles, potato groupers, scorpionfish, black and white snapper, batfish, butterfly fish and many varieties of pufferfish. Macro lovers can look in amongst the corals to see a wide array of nudibranch, flatworms, gobies and anemone shrimps. Katipanan | max depth 20m Katipanan Is named after the small cowry shells often seen on this site. Situated on the Southern side of the island this is an easy dives site with little or no current. It is a gentle slope with soft corals and a step down to a sandy slope and can be dived in the direction of Rock Point West or towards Chapel Point, effectively it is two dive sites in one! Good Macro dive. Chapel Point | max depth 30m From this dive site you can see Apo Island's only chapel. It starts on a steep white sandy slope that closely resembles a ski piste and joins a very dramatic wall. The wall has many nooks and crannies and large over hangs which are great for exploring. Chapel Point can be dived as a very easy shallow dive or a deeper dive with a bottom beyond recreational dive limits. The wall has a vast quantity of gorgonian sea fans, soft corals and anemones. Look out for the numerous garden eels in the shallows, blue and yellow ribbon eels which are frequently spotted in the over hangs, nudibranch, the odd lazy turtle sitting on top of the wall. Boluarte | max depth 18m This is a dive site so unique that the volcanic nature of the island can be seen as steady streams of bubbles erupt from the sand, shimmering as they catch the sun light. This is an easy dive site with a varied topography. A little wall dive, followed by a slope littered with coral heads and joining back on a fringing reef. Largahan | max depth 18m This dive site starts on a sandy steep slope which joins a reef a small wall and back to a gentle slope again. Largahan is a beautiful diverse dive site with lots of nudibranch, flatworms and frogfish to look out for. Volcanic bubbles can also be seen in the sand. |

Dauin's marine sanctuaries line the coast and can easily be accessed from the shore or by boat. The boundaries are clearly identified by the semicircle of buoys immediately off shore. All the dive sites are a short ride away from Atmosphere. |
Atmosphere House Reef | max depth 20m Only a step away from Atmosphere and one of the largest coastal sanctuaries, the house reef offers a splendour of underwater life. Dives here need to be planned in order to avoid strong currents, but can also be dived as a great drift dive. With a depth range of 5-20m it makes a great dive site for all levels. Diverse in nature it begins with a blanket of soft corals, followed by a section of fungia corals and onto a large area of staghorn corals. Great dive for fish identification, photography and macro lovers, since there are frequent sightings of barracuda, turtles, emperor fish, potato groupers, nudibranch, frogfish, pipefish and razor fish. Mandarin Fish Dive | max depth 7m Directly opposite Atmosphere's restaurant, 'Blue', lies the home to many mandarin fish which are so shy in nature they only venture out at dusk. Entering into the water shortly before sunset and heading to a maximum depth of 7m, you can hang out and hover over the staghorn corals to watch for the mating rituals of the stunningly colourful fish. Watch the males compete for the females and if you are lucky you will witness the little 'dance' as they join together and swim upwards from the protection of their home for their brief interlude. This is truly a photographer's dream. Also seen around the dive site are leaf scorpionfish, pipefish, morayeels and mantis shrimp. . Masaplod Sur | max depth 25m Starting at around 8m there is a small area of artificial reef constructed of car tyres. A sandy slope leads to an area of soft corals, stag horn corals and periodic boulders litter the shallows. This is a great dive site for macro and is suitable for all levels of divers. Often seen in the area are ghost pipe fish and turtles Masaplod North | max depth 25m Nestled within the same sanctuary boundary as Masaplod Sur, this dive site is known for its beautiful marine life, from its crazy creepy crawlies to its larger pelagics. This is a gentle slope and whilst good for all levels it can be a slightly more challenging drift dive if planned. Look out for spotted stingrays, red snapper, potato groupers and schools of jacks. Ginaman | max depth 20m This dive site is good for the photographer or the macro enthusiast. It is an artificial reef made of car tyres and only covers a very small area. It begins on top of the slope in sea grass and ventures down the sandy slope to the reef - the dive sight requires patience but you will be rewarded with sightings of pipefish, nudibranch and frogfish. Dauin South/North | max depth 25m This reef covers quite a large area and is situated close to the small town of Dauin. Generally it is dived as two separate dives the South and North. It is a gentle sloping reef with soft corals in the deep and mixed corals in the shallows. At around 20m there is a huge Eel garden and is a great place to watch for turtles and the odd passing Wahoo. Suitable for all divers since there is generally little current if any. The sandy slopes are a great place to look out for star gazers, sea horses, demon stingers and ghost pipefish. The Cars | max depth 30m This is the deepest of the coastal marine sanctuaries. 'Cars' is an artificial reef comprised of two old volkswagen cars, a series of oil drums and cement mixers. It is a great place to look for juvenile batfish, juvenile angelfish, dwarf lion fish, snake eels and saddleback anemone fish and makes for a good deep and photography dive. Sahara Deep | max depth 27m This dive site is another of the coastal artificial reef systems; Sahara is made out of a steel hull boat lying around 14m and old Volkswagen at 20m a pyramid structure of car tyres and a small multi-cab. Lots of red snapper, batfish, striped catfish and juvenile emperors can be seen here. Saraha Reef | max depth 20m Ranging in depth from 5-18m this is a gentle sloping reef. Characterized by the wreck of a small ex-dive boat, many lion fish and red snapper reside here. A large school of yellow snapper are often seen swimming around the end of the reef near 3 large barrel sponges. Many turtles, razorfish and pufferfish are often seen around the shallows. Whilst the reef is not large in nature the diversity of life makes for a great coastal dive. Atlantis and San Miguel | max depth 20m The Atlantis sanctuary comprises of two dive sites, the area is generally too big to cover in one dive. On the Southern side is Atlantis reef and Atlantis artificial reef. The artificial reef is a small area made up of car tyres, schools of yellow snappers can be seen here along with the odd sighting of flamboyant cuttlefish. Crossing from here head into the sanctuary on a gentle slope with a maximum depth of 20m. San Miguel on the Northern side starts with a large sandy slope, a great opportunity to spot for macro as you eventually join the reef. Mainit | max depth 20m Mainit is an exhilarating drift dive. Due to the nature of the currents here there are frequent sightings of large schools of barracuda. Mainit, in local dialect, means hot or warm. Placing a hand in the sand will allow you to feel the warm temperature and often bubbles can be seen being released from the sand, indicating the volcanic nature of the area |

Mimic Octopus – a great way to end your holiday
July 01st, 2010
When British couple Janet Parker and Paul Dale visited Atmosphere in July, they were lucky enough to get the Divemaster to themselves a lot of the time, and it surely paid off. Janet is a keen underwater photographer, and despite some strobe-issues, she captured most of our critters during her two weeks of diving.

And the Spa construction goes on…
July 15th, 2010
Even though we are not opening our new Spa until December 1, many of the buildings and features are already in place. The main building is rising up behind the bamboo fence, as are the four massage pavilions. The circular pool, as well as the streams, waterfalls and the landscaping are well on their way. To give you an idea of how the Spa is laid out, have a look at this master plan.

Football World cup - also in Atmosphere!
June 28th, 2010
IWhen we realized in the first week of June that the Football World Cup would be on television, but not on any of our cable channels, a frantic few days followed while we got the cable-tv company to set it up for us and a projector and big screen installed in the bar. Many of us were seen bleary eyed in the mornings, since most games were played around midnight our time! Visitors from other resorts also came to enjoy the games, drinking beer and betting on the results.

Atmosphere now speaks German and Swiss!
June 01st, 2010 2:00pm
In May Atmosphere welcomed a new full time instructor to the dive team, Cornel “Windy” Windhofer, from Switzerland. He has previously worked in Boracay in the Philippines and will now trade in his ski jumping (yes, it’s true!) and snow boarding for coral reefs. Under water, Cornel is still hoping to see a mermaid, but in the meantime he loves looking at seahorses. Our Swedish instructor Ulrika will still be teaching when we get busy, but has moved from the dive shop to a position as Brand and Innovation manager with among other things web marketing, PR and communication on her table.
